On December 19, 2017, I am a motivational speaker for the Town of Sylvan Lake, Alberta All Staff Meeting.
Sylvan Lake, Alberta is a resilient and resourceful lakeside community, twenty minutes west of Red Deer, with a population of 14,816.
The audience consists of government employees in the areas of recreation, public works, family and community support services, police, fire, administration, finance and planning and development.
Speaking with several audience members, it sounds like a good culture and place to work. A lakeside community, people are proud to live their year round and value contributing to the community.
They must regularly influence and communicate with a supportive council so that they value the work they do and work with them to continue funding programs, services and facilities.
The All Staff Meeting is an opportunity for all departments to get together, celebrate, share what works and what needs improvement. Collaboration in government is critical, especially when times are challenging and resources are tight. Employees pull together and support other departments to achieve their goals. Nobody works in isolation and regularly rely on each other's facilities and resources.
Although collaboration is critical, it's hard to know what all departments have been working on at all times. Coming together as a group like this, we want to reinvigorate teams around the purpose of the work- which is to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Sylvan Lake. The work involves everything from filling potholes, snow removal, protective services, recreation programs, fielding resident concerns and more. A decision in one department can create havoc and chaos for another, mainly if not efficiently communicated.
I look forward to being a motivational speaker for the Town of Sylvan Lake All Staff Meeting. I will present the speech; This Would be Funny if it Wasn't Happening to Me! How to Navigate the Future with Humor, Enthusiasm, and Vigor.
